Anita Lowden

Acoma Pueblo

Anita Garcia Lowden was born in 1935 and died in 1975. She was a daughter of Jessie Garcia, sister of Stella Shutiva and sister-in-law of Sarah Garcia.

Like her mother, Anita was one of the first Acoma potters to use Mimbres Revival designs on her work. Ancient Mimbres designs were often composites of legendary creatures, complete with geometric design palletes of their own. Anita was a master of Mimbres animal designs and the geometric art that accompanies them.

While her artistry elevated modern Acoma pottery to new aesthetic horizons, she also produced many types of more traditional work for the tourist trade, including smaller, less expensive items that would sell quickly and required less time and material: like many Acoma potters working in the 1950s, Anita made quite a few traditional Acoma turkey figures.
