Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo was born at Polacca, Arizona on September 7, 1928. Her mother was Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, her great-grandmother Nampeyo of Hano. She grew up playing with clay and making pottery. She has passed her knowledge and skills on to her daughter, Hisi Quotskuyva Nampeyo, and nephews Steve Lucas and Les Namingha.
Dextra was proclaimed an "Arizona Living Treasure" in 1994 and was given the first Arizona State Museum Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
