Frances Naranjo

Santa Clara Pueblo

Frances Naranjo Salazar (1936-2002) was a potter from Santa Clara Pueblo. She was the daughter of Flora and Ramon Naranjo, sister of Barbara Martinez and Glenda Naranjo. She learned the traditional methods of making Santa Clara pottery from her mother and passed them on to her children: Yolanda Velarde, Sophie Cata and Elaine Salazar.

Frances made mostly traditional shapes of black and red ware, usually carved with feathers, an avanyu or geomeotric designs. Her work earned awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Fair & Market and the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Shows.
