Born in 1961, Greg Garcia's father was from San Juan Pueblo and his mother from Santa Clara Pueblo. At the age of 14 he began making pottery with Severa Tafoya, his maternal grandmother. She taught him all the fundamentals of the traditional Santa Clara way of making pottery. She also encouraged him to stay within the long family tradition of working with clay.
Greg specializes in the hand coiled traditional black and red Santa Clara pottery. He gathers his clay from sacred grounds within Santa Clara Pueblo. He hand cleans the clay, mixes, hand coils, shapes, and fires his pottery the traditional way, outdoors with horse manure. He also polishes his pottery to add a great shine to his works.
Greg signs his pottery as: "Greg Garcia, San Juan/Santa Clara".
