San Felipe Pueblo potter Ricardo Ortiz
Ricardo Ortiz

The son of Frank Ortiz and Vanencia Montaño Ortiz, grandson of Lorenzo and Candelaria Montaño, Ricardo Ortiz was born and grew up in San Felipe Pueblo. Today, six children and nine grandchildren later, he still makes his living with silversmithing, jewelry making and pottery making.

He started working in pottery early in life, painting designs on his mother's and his grandmother's pots. And although he learned the designs from his mother, he says his pottery-making skills are self-taught.
