Jennie Laate

Zuni Pueblo

Jennie Laate was born into Acoma Pueblo and learned the Acoma methods of making pottery as she grew up. Then she married Neil Laate, a silversmith from Zuni and she moved to his home there. She learned the Zuni way of making pottery from Daisy Hooee and, as the art teacher at Zuni High School from 1974 to 1990, she taught many pueblo students the traditional way, too. However, the school had an electric kiln and her students learned to use that rather than use the traditional outdoor firing methods.
