Lorenzo Spencer

Lorenzo Spencer is a Navajo potter working in the Cow Springs area on the Navajo Nation. His wife is Susie Crank, daughter of Rose Williams (who is considered the matriarch of Navajo potters).

Susie taught Lorenzo to pot but they don't work together. Her designs are more basic while his are more like Navajo weaving designs. He'll lightly carve, add a darker slip and use sgraffito techniques to change the texture of his surfaces. She prefers a smooth surface with perhaps a small biyo' below the opening. Her colorings are generally part of her firing process. Lorenzo fires similarly and both coat their pieces with warm pinon pitch before they cool.
