Annie Baca was born to Cresencia and Carmilita Tafoya of Santa Clara Pueblo in 1941. Among her siblings were Mark Tafoya, Harriet Tafoya and Pauline Martinez. She grew up in a household of potters and learned from them.
A traditional Santa Clara potter who painted her pieces rather than carved them, Annie has long been known for her finely painted and well-polished black-on-black pottery. As her sister Pauline married Maria Martinez son George and moved to San Ildefonso, Annie may have been influenced a bit by what Pauline learned there. Santa Clara and San Ildefonso have a long history of intermarriage and cross-pollination of pottery styles and techniques.
