Phyllis and Marlin Hemlock

Santa Clara Pueblo

Phyllis and Marlin Hemlock are a husband and wife team producing pottery at Santa Clara Pueblo. Their pieces are often lightly carved with sgraffito designs and inlaid stones.

Marlin is a Seneca of the Iroquois Confederacy of New York and Canada. When he married Phyllis Tafoya of Santa Clara, he moved to her home there.

Phyllis had been raised by Mida Tafoya and had learned the traditional ways through watching, then working with her adoptive mother. When Marlin moved in he learned from Mida, too.
