Drew Lewis

Acoma Pueblo

Born in 1927, Drew Lewis was a son of the famous Acoma potter Lucy Lewis. Like his brother Ivan and sisters Emma, Carmel and Dolores, Drew grew up watching their mother making pottery the traditional way. Back then, though, the making of pottery was considered a woman's job. Then one day he told his mother he wanted to learn so he could make pottery on his own. He was one of the few men making pottery at Acoma in the 1970s and 1980s.

Drew was known for making modern shapes and decorating them with Mimbres-Revival and traditional Acoma designs.
