Stella Shutiva

Acoma Pueblo

Born in 1939 and passing on in 1997, Stella Shutiva was the daughter of Jessie Garcia and sister of Anita Lowden. She learned to make pottery watching and working with her mother as she grew up. Jessie Garcia was instrumental in reviving the ancient corrugated style of pottery and she taught that to her daughter, who later passed on the knowledge and techniques to her own daughter, Jackie Shutiva. Jackie once told me she still uses some of the tools that were passed on to her from her mother and grandmother.
